E3 SPARK PLUGS/ LUCAS OIL TEAM IGNITES THE OSHKOSH CROWD
OSHKOSH, WI. JULY 25TH & 26TH 2008
The
first back to back night races on the WSORR schedule sparked
light on the great race action of the WSORR series and the E3
Spark Plugs / Team Lucas / Toyo race team of Kevin and Jon
Probst. The team came to Oshkosh with high hopes to carry the
great momentum from the first half season of WSORR racing.
Racing was scheduled for Friday night and Saturday night under
the lights of the ˝ mile dirt raceway. The track layout was
good and developed many lines to pass creating some of the
best racing of the year.
Practice was scheduled for Friday afternoon and both trucks
were fast and ready. Kevin and Jon both set fast times for
practice in both the Pro Lite and Pro 2wd divisions. The team
was ready to go and some different grooves and tires were
tried for the evening races. The Pro 2wd used the Toyo Open
Country M/T tires as usual, but with little grooving. We chose
the Toyo Open Country A/T tires for the Pro Lite as the added
rubber and lighter package were better suited to the short
clay track.

The Friday races started and first up for the team was the Pro
Lite class. At the green, Jon came through the first turn in
5th. Driving aggressively, Jon made several passes in turn one
and made several more passes on the lead trucks in the infield
right hand turn. Making the passes clean and coming through
the infield rhythm section, Jon got off line hitting a K/Rail
barrier ending the day.
The Pro 2wd race was up next and Kevin was starting in the 6th
spot 3rd row inside. At the green, the trucks in the first 2
rows did not leave. Kevin was stuck following everyone into
turn one coming through in 6th with Dan V taking the lead.
Kevin worked on the field and after 5 laps in the 16 lap race,
was in the #2 spot. Working to get close, the #99 E3/Lucas Oil
Pro 2 was fast. Kevin worked every line to find a zone to take
the spot and after nearly 4 laps, took the position from Dan V
with a clean, no contact pass. #77 took the opportunity at the
next turn to change his line and drive straight into Kevin’s
left rear tire. Officials missed the call for rough driving
and Kevin , with a flat continued to keep pace with #77 and
finished the day in 2nd. “I was disappointed the Dan decided
to race that way” said Kevin in the post race interview, “I
worked on him for 4 laps to pass clean and the next corner he
hits my tire causing a flat. We will be ready for round 8!”
Saturday’s races were again scheduled for night and the crowd
loved the show. First for the team was Jon and the Pro Lite.
At the start, Jon again made a great drive to come around the
first lap in 2nd. During the 2nd lap, the shifter broke and
left the #5 with only 2nd gear. Jon kept pace and eventually
ended the day in 4th.
The Pro 2wd race was short for Kevin as he started in the 6th
spot again, but this time made some great moves and took the
lead right at the 2nd jump. Coming down the infield straight,
Kevin’s truck shut off. An electrical switch shorted out and
shut down the ignition. End of day for the #99 and it really
hurts the points to have a TG on the tally. Took greens are
only 1 point.
“The team is refocused on the last 4 races” said Kevin “We
need to finish as strong as the trucks have run to have a shot
in the championships” “Both trucks have been fast and up
front, we need to get rid of the new truck problems in the #99
and get to the top podium spots for the remaining races” said
Kevin.
The next event is in Bark River Michigan on August 9th and
10th.
